Bruges Hotels Guide: St Saviour's Cathedral
Bruges' first church was built in the tenth century but now only a few traces of the original, Romanesque, style remain. Work started on rebuilding the church towards the end of the thirteenth century but was not completed until the sixteenth.
The church was given the title Cathedral in the nineteenth century.
Of note in the cathedral are the Gothic Choir stalls which date from 1430, the Louis sixteenth pulpit, and an impressive organ in the rood loft. The chapel of Saint Jacob contains a number of murals dating from the end of the thirteenth century until 1576.
There are also a number paintings from the flemish school (14th - 17th century), and eighteenth century tapestries.
