Bruges Hotels Guide: The Stadhuis
Just off the Markt is another square, the Burg, Bruges' administrative centre. The Burg was once the site of a castle and the church of St Donatius, but is now where the beautiful city hall can be found.
Bruges' Stadhuis was built in 1376 and has six gothic windows on the front facade. Also displayed are the town weapons of towns and villages administered by Bruges in the middle ages. Of particular interest is the imposing Gothic Hall which is decorated with paintings of important events from Bruges' history. The paintings are not mediaeval, unlike the building itself, but date from 1895.
Other notable buildings in the Burg are the neo classic former former Court of Justice, with it's famous chimney of the Bruges Vrije. The baroque Deanery can be found to the left of the square and hidden in the corner is the famous Basilius church, which has it's own page.
